Empower & Breathe: Fashion Revolution Yoga Fundraiser

April 27, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Inside Out Yoga – Who Made Your Clothes? for Fashion Revolution Day

Rana-Plaza-FR-700x438

On 24 April 2013, 1133 people died in the Rana Plaza catastrophe in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A further 2500 were injured. They were killed while working for familiar fashion brands in one of the many ‘accidents’ that plague the garment industry.

On Fashion Revolution Day we turn our clothes inside out so our labels are in full view, and ask a simple question. Who made your clothes?

How to Join the Fashion Revolution

Have you ever thought about who made your yoga and workout clothes? #whomadeyourclothes

Join yoga teacher and Fashion Revolution board member Amisha Ghadiali for a yoga session with a difference. Come to the mat with your clothes inside out (labels proudly showing), for an uplifting class themed on our power to change the world around us and create more freedom in our lives.

We will then be refreshed with a smoothie and snacks, and hear from designers of yoga and fitness brands telling us a bit about who made their clothes, and how we can support shifts in this part of the industry.

Donations from ticket sales and raffle will go to READ, a small NGO in India which partners with TRAID in the UK. In Tamil Nadu The Sumangali Scheme takes young girls below 14 years old to work in the mills for international brands until they are 18. They convince their parents they must do this so there is money for their marriage dowry. The girls are then trapped working long hours, in terrible conditions without holidays….making our clothes. READ work to take the girls out of the mills and into education so they can be empowered and change their destiny.

This event and the raffle will be directly supporting one family in their search for justice for their daughters and to stop this happening to other girls.

This family lost two daughters through The Sumangali Scheme. One was raped by a group of mill supervisors and died (sexual abuse is not uncommon in the mills). Her older sister committed suicide two days later (her family think it may have been because she felt like she should have protected her younger sister).

This is not an isolated incident. There have been other mysterious deaths in the mill, but no investigation has taken place. The money from this event will go to this family so that they can take legal for their daughters and make enough noise to launch an official investigation.
